Women and girls are overrepresented globally among the poorest and are disproportionately impacted by multiple intersecting deprivations, or multidimensional poverty. While important progress has been made for women and girls in recent decades, setbacks have occurred and many gains have been inequitable.
To tackle the challenges facing women and girls, UNICEF is working around the world to advocate for their rights, to help meet their basic needs, and to expand opportunities available to them.
In 2022, UNICEF helped:
• 17.2 million adolescent girls receive care and interventions to prevent child marriage.
• 8.8 million people access gender-based violence interventions in emergencies in 65 countries.
• 17.7 million girls and women access water programs and 4.5 million girls access sanitation programs.
• 17.5 million women and girls access UNICEF-supported programs across 78 countries with menstrual health and hygiene support.
