Globally, 1 in 4 adolescent girls aged 15-19 are neither in education, training nor employment compared to less than 1 in 10 boys of the same age. When looking specifically at education, an estimated 24 million additional children—many of them girls—are projected to drop out of school permanently due to the pandemic. Despite progress, girls still learn less, end up earning less and have fewer assets and opportunities.
With support from partners like Clé de Peau Beauté, UNICEF is working to transform the lives of girls globally and support them in overcoming gender barriers that limit aspirations and opportunities and limit their ability to take on challenges of the 21st century. In 2019, Clé de Peau Beauté pledged the world’s largest contribution of $8.7M to support UNICEF’s Gender Equality Programs – with a focus on promoting STEM education in Bangladesh, Kyrgyzstan, and Niger. Now renewed for another cycle, Clé de Peau Beauté's contribution will support UNICEF’s Gender Equality which focuses on education as one of four pillars, along with ending child marriage, violence prevention in emergencies, and promoting girls’ health.
In 2021 alone, UNICEF:
• Reached 7.6 million adolescent girls in 47 countries with child marriage-related prevention and care interventions
• Promoted gender-sensitive or gender-responsive programs in 100 countries
• Supported 13.9 million people in receiving gender-based violence risk mitigation
